Topic: 'Hindi movies, based on Books'
This set contains
five questions on the above-mentioned topic. Give the answers in the comment
section.
1. Reportedly, Gulzar
had expressed his reservations when daughter Meghna decided to turn the debut novel, written by this author (pic) into a
film. For Meghna, what appealed the most about the story was that it portrayed
an intrepid young girl’s journey. The film ultimately received 15 nominations
at the Filmfare Awards, where it won five awards, including Best Film, Best
Director, and Best Actress.

2. One of the
best-selling crime novels of the 19th century, it became the British
Empire’s most sensational ethnographic fiction. Its avid readers included Queen
Victoria. Prior to Rudyard Kipling’s Kim, it was the most talked-about novel
about India and was responsible for the coinage of a particular word in the
English language. The presence of that very word in a 21st century
film’s title started a rumour that the said film was inspired from the
above-mentioned novel. But the director (pic)
vehemently refuted that claim.

3. A seminal work of
literary realism, this debut novel is now considered the author’s masterpiece,
and one of the most influential literary works in history. Mired in controversy
for obscenity, it (directly or indirectly) inspired quite a few number of times
in different languages since the 1930s (pic).

4. The first chapter,
titled – ‘Bare Beginnings’, started with the following lines : “Before I really
begin this book, let me first tell you what this book is not. It is not a guide
on how to live through college. On the contrary, it is probably an example of
how screwed up your college years can get if you don’t think straight.”
5. Robert Beckwith is
contacted one day by a friend in France, who tells him that Nicole, a woman
with whom Robert had had a relationship years ago, has died - and Jean-Claude,
their son Robert never knew he had, is now an orphan. That evening, he explains
the situation to his wife, Sheila. After lot of ups-and-downs, the whole family
come to terms with Jean-Claude and their relationship with him.
